Boss’s Day has been celebrated in the U.S. each year on October 16 since it was officially recognized in 1962. Originally, it was intended to improve relationships between managers and their employees.

Over the past half-century, workplaces have undergone a lot of change. In many cases, the tidy org charts of the past have been replaced by complicated reporting structures that may actually require advanced math to figure out.

Even so, Boss’s Day carries with it the expectation that employees should recognize their managers or supervisors. But it can be difficult to figure out how to navigate the unwritten rules and come up with something meaningful in keeping with the spirit of the holiday.

Ideas for Boss’s Day: Consider the Relationship

How you interact with your boss on a day-to-day basis can make things tricky. If your working relationship is very formal, it can be awkward to make a personal gesture once a year. On the other hand, if you and your boss are already close, the challenge becomes thinking of a way to emphasize your appreciation for them in a new way.

Directors, managers and supervisors traditionally receive recognition from their direct reports, but companies are beginning to take advantage of the top-down opportunity for upper management to recognize middle- and front-line managers for keeping their teams aligned, focused and engaged.

A Guide for Celebrating Bosses

Hallmark Business Connections makes it easy for employees to honor their bosses through their company’s Employee Recognition Program. A formal recognition program gives employees at all levels a resource they can use to make thoughtful and meaningful connections at all levels of the company—up, down and laterally.

With the program already set up to allow employees to send cards whenever it’s appropriate for business, they have access to the perfect resource to surprise and delight their boss on Boss’s Day. Having this culture of recognition in place helps remove any potential awkwardness employees might feel about honoring their boss.
